Tinubu swears in Christopher Musa as Defence Minister

President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Christopher Gwabin Musa as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, marking a swift transition at the helm of the country’s security apparatus.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, shortly after Musa’s confirmation by the Senate. Musa, a retired general and former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), brings decades of military experience, including leadership roles in anti-insurgency operations and infantry command across various formations of the Nigerian Army.

Musa’s appointment follows the resignation of his predecessor, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who stepped down due to health reasons. President Tinubu described Musa as a “highly capable officer” and expressed confidence in his ability to strengthen Nigeria’s defence framework amidst rising security challenges.

During his Senate screening, Musa pledged to address recent security lapses, ensure coordinated action among all security agencies, and prioritize reforms in procurement and personnel welfare. He emphasised a firm stance against criminal activity, promising no negotiation with criminals and a focus on safeguarding citizens and national assets.

The swift appointment of Musa, a hands-on operational leader, underscores the administration’s urgency in tackling the surge in kidnappings, banditry, and insurgency. Analysts note that his leadership is expected to provide continuity and decisiveness, reducing potential gaps in the Ministry of Defence during a critical period for national security.

With his decades of experience, Musa now takes charge of shaping policies, overseeing joint military operations, and collaborating with federal and state security agencies to restore stability across Nigeria.
