The result also ended France’s hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final under Didier Deschamps.
Following jubilant celebrations after the final whistle, Spain will now await the winner of the second semi-final between Argentina and England to determine their opponents in the final at the New York-New Jersey Stadium.
