Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), disclosed the development.
She confirmed that officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are coordinating the evacuation and assisting citizens who want to depart the country.
The evacuees are being guided to the Armenian border, where arrangements have been made to ensure their safe passage.
The move follows heightened security concerns after coordinated military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel on February 28, which reportedly prompted retaliatory missile and drone attacks across the region, stoking fears of a wider conflict.
Despite the escalating tension, Dabiri-Erewa reassured that no Nigerian has been harmed. She emphasized that embassy personnel remain stationed at the border to receive and support those who choose to leave.
“Willing Nigerians are being escorted across the Armenian border by officials of the Nigerian embassy in Iran for safe passage. No Nigerian in Iran has been affected by the war, and officials remain at the border to receive all who want to leave,” she wrote.
The evacuation underscores the government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians amid the ongoing hostilities between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
