NERC warns against touching victims of electrical shock

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a public safety advisory urging residents to keep a safe distance from live electrical wires and avoid touching anyone who is in contact with electricity.

In a statement shared on its official X handle, the commission stressed that electricity poses serious danger and warned that attempting to rescue a victim without proper precautions could lead to further injuries or even death.

The advisory cautioned that while the instinct to help may be strong, touching a person being electrocuted with bare hands or trying to pull them away from a live source could transmit the current to the rescuer.

NERC outlined key safety steps for the public. It advised people never to touch a live wire or an electrocuted victim directly, to stand at a safe distance while ensuring others do the same, and to immediately contact the nearest electricity distribution company or emergency services.

The commission emphasized that only trained professionals equipped with the right tools should handle electrical emergencies. Acting responsibly, it noted, can prevent additional casualties and save lives.

The warning forms part of NERC’s ongoing public awareness campaign aimed at reducing accidents linked to fallen power lines and other electrical hazards. Residents were encouraged to share the advisory widely to help safeguard their communities.
