Resident doctors begin 5-days warning strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has begun a five-day warning strike today after the Federal Government failed to meet its demands on unpaid allowances, salary arrears, and other welfare-related issues.

The association said the decision was taken due to what it described as continued government inaction despite repeated ultimatums.

Resident doctors are a crucial part of Nigeria’s public health system, delivering most clinical services in federal and state hospitals. Their withdrawal of services often severely disrupts healthcare delivery, leaving patients stranded and facilities overwhelmed.

In a notice titled “Declaration of Strike Action” and signed by NARD Secretary-General, Dr. Oluwasola Odunbaku, the association confirmed that the strike commenced at 8:00 am today.

“Good morning, NEC Members, thank you all for your continued cooperation and understanding. As clearly stated in our earlier communique, the strike is scheduled to commence at 8:00 am today (Friday). All Centre leadership is expected to guide their members accordingly. Further updates will be communicated to NEC members in due course.”

NARD’s demands include the immediate release of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, payment of five months’ arrears from the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, as well as outstanding specialist and hazard allowances.

The association said the decision to strike followed a six-hour virtual Extraordinary National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting after the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum to the government in July, which was later extended by 10 days and finally by an additional 24 hours that elapsed on Thursday, September 11.

The E-NEC expressed its disappointment that, despite several extensions, the Federal Government had yet to address critical welfare issues, leaving NARD with no option but to proceed with industrial action.
