Chimamanda Adichie responds to criticism regarding her surrogacy

Famous author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has responded to criticism surrounding her decision to welcome twin sons through surrogacy.

In an interview with Chude Jideonwo, the acclaimed author explained that she chose to share her experience to help normalize non-traditional paths to motherhood.

Adichie argued that while surrogacy can be exploited, it can also be done ethically. She pointed out the inconsistency in some critics’ views, who advocate for women’s autonomy over their bodies yet condemn surrogacy as dehumanizing.

Adichie expressed hope that her openness would encourage other women to speak freely about their own experiences without shame or judgment.

She concluded that her children, including her sons and daughter, are precious gifts and that she has zero regrets about her decision.

She said: “My boys are so precious to me. And I hated that anything about them would become politicised – so on the one hand I thought ‘I wish I hadn’t talked about it’, but on the other hand there is no way I am going to lie.”

She continued: “I am hoping that if anything good comes out of this, it would be that more women are less ashamed of talking about reaching motherhood through non-traditional means. Because our society is so judgemental, and I don’t think that that is good for anybody.

“But, you know, my daughter and my babies are the greatest gift I’ve been given, so ZERO REGRETS.”
