According to the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the closure is necessary to replace about 50 damaged bearings beneath the bridge deck—part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the structure and ensure public safety.
Although the bridge is not at risk of immediate collapse, officials have observed signs of wear, including vibrations during traffic flow, prompting the urgent need for rehabilitation.
The Marine Bridge, which connects Ijora to Apapa—home to Nigeria’s busiest ports—plays a vital role in the movement of goods and commuters
To ease traffic congestion during the closure, the government has announced alternative routes:
- Private vehicles coming from Ijora into Apapa will be diverted through the Seven Up Roundabout.
- Heavy-duty trucks will be redirected through Costain and Iganmu.
Motorists are advised to cooperate with traffic officials, plan their journeys ahead, and expect some delays.
The Ministry of Works reassures the public that the repairs are essential for the bridge’s long-term safety and structural integrity
