While unveiling the fabric at a ceremony held on Monday, September 16, at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, Mrs Tinubu explained that the concept of a national fabric was inspired by her visit to Zimbabwe in December 2023, where she saw a similar initiative. Mrs Tinubu said the new national fabric would be worn across the country to celebrate the Independence Day on October 1, 2024.
She disclosed that the fabric will be mass-produced by local manufacturers to stimulate local textile industries, create jobs, and boost the economy.
This has received mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media. While some have applauded the initiative, others argue that the timing is wrong as many Nigerians are hungry, jobless and battling with a number of issues including the hike in the cost of living.

What are we celebrating?

ME:Does this even make sense to them? People are dying of hunger and you are here wasting millions in unveiling a national unity fabric.
Something is fundamentally wrong with us obviously.
Well they get luck that… pic.twitter.com/6LZlGVlhsp
Tell Remi Tinubu that a country divided by values, can't be united by fabric.
