Man Steals Army Uniform In Barracks

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested one Abayomi Akanji in the Adatan area of Abeokuta, the state capital, for allegedly impersonating a soldier.

The suspect was apprehended along with two accomplices – Adebayo Oladimeji and Lawal Akinmoye. Akanji was said to have stolen the uniform from an army barracks and used it to terrorize residents of the community.

He reportedly used it during the period of the fuel scarcity to harass people and create panic. Luck, however, ran out on him on April 17, 2018, when operatives from the Adatan Police Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Olajide Joshua, were on a routine patrol. They were said to have accosted him and while he was being questioned, he owned up to being a fake soldier.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday, said Akanji led detectives to his accomplices. He said, “The suspects have been terrorizing residents of Adatan, Bode Olude and other communities under the pretense of being personnel of the Nigerian Army. Their activities were at the peak during the fuel crisis when they dressed up in full army uniform with which they harassed people at various fuel stations.

“The police accosted the first suspect, Abayomi Akanji, in full military uniform without a name tag. His appearance looked suspicious and that prompted the policemen to put some questions to him. But he was unable to give good and satisfactory account of himself as a soldier. He was promptly arrested and taken to the station. On interrogation, he confessed to being a fake soldier and that he stole the uniform in an army barracks which he visits frequently.”
