Gorgeous And Trendy Gele Styles

Remember when that song by lagbaja came out “oni gele yi skentele, skontolo” everyone loved it because it had a nice ring to it and the video was hilarious. Well the veteran musician didn’t just sing that song without being inspired by what he was seeing around him. Wearing gele has always been a thing for women to do, the head gear is our ultimate accessory.

Since the 1700’s the gele has been a part of our history and so adorning the head gear is a way to connect to our past heritage. In recent times the gele has gone from ceiling style to a much more composed structure. Since the fabric used is of a strong nature molding it into different shape is attainable.

As Lagbaja was so quick to point out in his video, the head gear is a form of showing off your fashion prowess. Still reminiscing; there was a time veteran Yoruba actress Iya Rainbow used to rock her gele to touch the ceiling (not literally). When she stepped into the venue of an event everyone knew who she was, it was a form of identity and she held on to it for years.

According to history the colors of each gele had a different meaning depending on your societal status, nowadays things are very very different than they used to be but one thing still remains true and that is the fact that the gele is an accessory that fits perfectly with many of our traditional ceremonies. While the “oni le gogoro” style might no longer be in existence there are still some fabulous styles out there, Lets scroll down to see:
