Speaking during his inaugural address shortly after a brief handover ceremony with his predecessor, AIG Olorundare Moshood, Fatai said his leadership would consolidate on existing security frameworks while deploying proactive, intelligence-led, and technology-driven strategies to combat crime.
He noted that his approach represents a continuation of the strides recorded under his predecessor.
“I was part and parcel of the previous administration for about three-quarters of its tenure. So, whatever successes were recorded, I believe I contributed to them. This is not entirely new to me, but a continuation with a futuristic approach,” he said.
“The Command will sustain and build upon the existing security architecture and operational strategies already in place. Lagos, as the economic hub of Nigeria and a leading mega city in sub-Saharan Africa transitioning into a smart city, presents unique and complex security challenges.
“We are fully aware that a secure environment is fundamental to economic growth and public confidence, and we are prepared to meet these challenges head-on. The Lagos State Police Command remains resolute in its mandate to protect lives and property. We will adopt proactive, intelligence-led, technology-driven, and community-based policing strategies to effectively address security challenges across the state.
“Criminal elements and violators of the law will find no safe haven in Lagos. Community engagement will be strengthened as a cornerstone of our policing strategy. We will continue to build trust, deepen cooperation, and encourage residents to see the Police as partners in progress.”
He said the Command would prioritise community-based policing, youth engagement, and stronger collaboration with the media as key components of its security strategy.
Fatai also emphasised inter-agency cooperation, noting that the Police would continue to work closely with the military and other security agencies to enhance intelligence sharing and coordinated operations.
Addressing officers and men of the Command, he stressed that discipline, professionalism, and integrity would be non-negotiable, adding that there would be zero tolerance for police brutality and unprofessional conduct.
“Operations will be guided by the rule of law and strict respect for fundamental human rights. Any personnel found wanting will be dealt with in accordance with extant laws,” he said, while assuring that personnel welfare and training would receive due attention.
On operational priorities, the CP said the Command would intensify efforts to reduce crime, tackle cultism and violent offences, improve traffic discipline, enhance visibility policing, and restore peace in identified flashpoints.
He expressed confidence in his understanding of the state’s policing landscape and his ability to address emerging challenges.
“I understand the terrain and the peculiarities of policing Lagos. I know the kind of interventions to put in place to address issues as they arise, and I can assure residents that we will keep crime at the barest minimum,” he said.
Fatai also urged residents to make use of available complaint channels to report misconduct and rights violations, assuring prompt response and accountability.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report complaints or rights violations through the Complaint Response Unit via 09111111150 (calls) and 09111111151 (WhatsApp), the Public Relations Office, or the nearest police station. Prompt and effective response is assured. If you see something, say something. Security is a collective responsibility.
“Let me assure the government and people of Lagos State that under my leadership, the Command will remain committed, responsive, and accountable,” he stated.
