Beatrice Ekweremadu returns to Nigeria from UK prison

Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria almost two years after she was jailed in the United Kingdom over an organ trafficking case.

She arrived in the country on Tuesday, January 21, landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where friends and family members welcomed her following the completion of legal procedures that began in 2022.

Mrs Ekweremadu was found guilty alongside her husband for her involvement in a conspiracy linked to organ harvesting, a case that attracted global attention.

While Ike Ekweremadu was handed a nine-year and eight-month prison term as the central figure in the plot, his wife received a sentence of four years and six months.

The couple were convicted for arranging the movement of a 21-year-old Nigerian street trader to the UK with the purpose of obtaining his kidney for their daughter, Sonia, who has chronic kidney disease.

The prosecution was carried out under the United Kingdom’s Modern Slavery Act of 2015.

Another individual, Obinna Obeta, described as a medical intermediary in the scheme, was also convicted and is currently serving a 10-year jail term in the UK.

Ike Ekweremadu remains behind bars in the United Kingdom, where he continues to serve his sentence.

Their daughter, Sonia, who was cleared of wrongdoing during the 2023 trial, is still receiving medical care for her health condition.

Under UK law, offenders convicted of non-violent crimes may qualify for release on licence after completing half of their prison term.
