Elon Musk breaks record as first person to surpass $700bn net worth

Elon Musk has become the first individual in history to amass a personal fortune exceeding $700 billion, following a key ruling by the Delaware Supreme Court that reinstated a long-disputed Tesla compensation package.

According to the Forbes Billionaires Index, Musk’s net worth climbed as high as $749 billion late Friday after stock options valued at $139 billion were restored, reversing a decision made last year.

The ruling revived Musk’s 2018 Tesla pay package, originally valued at $56 billion, which a lower court had previously voided, describing it as “unfathomable.”

In its judgment, the Delaware Supreme Court said the 2024 decision to cancel the package was improper and inequitable, clearing the way for the compensation to stand.

The decision marks a significant legal victory for Musk and reinforces shareholder backing for his leadership at Tesla.

Earlier in the week, Musk had already broken records by surpassing $600 billion in net worth, driven partly by reports that SpaceX may be preparing for a public listing.

In November, Tesla shareholders separately approved a $1 trillion future pay plan for Musk, the largest in corporate history, as investors backed his vision of transforming the electric vehicle maker into an AI and robotics powerhouse.

Musk’s fortune now exceeds that of Google co-founder Larry Page by nearly $500 billion, cementing his position as the world’s richest person.
