Suspected Buruli Ulcer outbreak kills 8 in Adamawa

The Adamawa State Government has confirmed the death of eight people in Malabu Community, Fufore Local Government Area, following an outbreak suspected to be Buruli Ulcer.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Felix Tangwame, described the situation as “deeply concerning” while addressing journalists. He disclosed that samples collected from patients have been sent to the National Reference Laboratory for further investigation.

Tangwame explained that health officials are closely monitoring the community to prevent further spread of the disease. He added that some survivors are receiving specialised treatment at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola.

“Our medical team is working around the clock to stabilise their condition,” he said.

The commissioner assured residents that the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and other development partners, has deployed emergency response teams, launched awareness campaigns, and supplied medical aid to support the affected community.

While appealing for calm, Tangwame stressed that there was no cause for panic despite the tragic deaths. He urged residents to maintain proper hygiene, promptly report unusual skin ulcers or swellings, and avoid traditional remedies that could worsen infections.
