Led by coach Rena Wakama, Nigeria made history by becoming the first nation to win five straight Women’s Afrobasket titles — underlining their dominance in African women’s basketball.
The victory also extended their unbeaten run in the tournament to 10 years, with their last defeat dating back to October 2, 2015, against Cameroon.
Mali started strongly, edging the first quarter 26–21, but D’Tigress rallied to tie the game at 41–41 by halftime.
A commanding third-quarter display saw Nigeria move 61–56 ahead before their defence locked down in the fourth, restricting Mali to just eight points to wrap up a 14-point triumph.
The triumph comes after a gritty semi-final win over Senegal which required a late surge in the fourth quarter.
For Wakama — the first woman to coach a team to Afrobasket glory — it marks a perfect record of two titles from two tournaments, having also led D’Tigress to victory in 2023.
