Prof. Piwuna, who also serves as the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, succeeds Prof. Victor Osodeke, a soil science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
His emergence followed a closely contested election against Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held on Sunday in Benin City.
Piwuna takes office at a time of growing tension within the academic community, with concerns over the sharing formula of the recently released Earned Academic Allowances, ongoing brain drain, and the looming threat of industrial action.
