Legendary actor John Witherspoon dies at 77

Comedy and acting titan John Witherspoon has died aged 77. The star, who was known for hugely popular roles in Hollywood Shuffle and Black Jesus, had a lengthy career in showbiz, starting out as a model before turning his talents to comedy.



He is perhaps best known for the Friday comedy franchise, as well as penning with his brother William the hot Motown track What Becomes of the Brokenhearted.

A family statement paid tribute to the beloved entertainer and promised to honour his legacy.

It read: "It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working men in show business, died today at his home in Sherman Oaks at the age of 77."

The statement continued: "He is survived by his wife Angela, and his sons JD, Alexander, and a large family.

"We are all in shock, please give us a minute for a moment in privacy and we will celebrate his life and his work together.
