The Bauchi State Police Command says it has arrested and charged 25 men to court for raping victims, aged between four and 26 years old.

A Punch correspondent learnt that some of the suspects had been remanded in prison while others were on bail.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed, said the suspects were arrested between January 1 and April 28, adding that the rate of gender-related cases in the state was becoming alarming.

He called on members of the public to be wary of suspicious persons.

He said, “The rate at which gender-related offences are being perpetrated in the state is becoming a great source of concern to the command. Based on the available statistics, between January 1 and April 28, the command has recorded 25 cases. A total of 25 suspects were arrested and charged to various courts for prosecution.

“Members of the public, parents and guardians are enjoined to caution their children against strangers and be security conscious by reporting suspicious persons in their neighbourhood to the police.”

Meanwhile, the police in Bauchi said they had arrested a suspected human trafficker, Sadiya Umar, for luring a 13-year-old victim to Bauchi State to sell her.

The police said Umar, 21, who stayed behind NEPA office in Jos, Plateau State, brought the victim from Sabon Garin Saya in the Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The police spokesperson, Mohammed, said the suspect had confessed to the act and was assisting the police with useful information that could lead to the arrest of her accomplices after which they would be charged to court for prosecution.
