Gunmen Assassinate Village Head In Akwa Ibom

Two yet to be identified gunmen have assassinated the Village Head of Ikot Anta Eneng Obom in Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, Chief Emmanuel Umahaeyo.

Reports indicate that the suspected assassins who rode on a motorcycle shot Umahaeyo twice in his compound, Tuesday evening, killing him on the spot.

It was also learnt that the deceased traditional ruler, since assumption of office in December 2010 had a frosty relationship with some youths in the village.

A resident of the area who spoke to newsmen on the condition of anonymity disclosed that the two gunmen, who later headed to Nkek Urua Akpan Udosen, a neighbouring village, also shot and killed two other persons at the border, thinking they were indigenes of Ikot Anta, in an attempt to cover up their crime.

While confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Cordelia Nwawe, said: “Investigation is ongoing. We are looking into it. That is all I can say for now.

“You cannot give out information when you are not sure. We have to investigate that matter properly, then come out with a full story. For now, people should go about their normal lawful businesses without fear.”
