A Former Senator, Florence Ita-Giwa has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to cater for the needs of the displaced people of Bakassi in Cross River State.
She also urged the Federal Government to resettle them at their preferred location, Day spring Island because of its contiguity to the sea to aid their fishing profession.
A statement by Ita – Giwa, said that her people are hard working people, who do not want to depend on government’s goodwill but want a conducive and enabling environment to earn a living.
She stressed that the Cross River State Government cannot do provide all the facilities needed by the displaced people.
“The people have been traumatised and dehumanized while the youths are languishing in hopelessness with their generation gradually fainting into oblivion.
“The Federal government should please pay more attention to the people so as to alleviate their suffering and poverty, “She added.
Ita-Giwa further urged President Buhari to evolve a framework for their welfare and rehabilitation, quoting the Kampala convention on IDP established in 2012 by the African Union, AU, of which Nigeria is one of the signatories as a result of the large number of displaced persons in Bakassi and the North East.
