Man U Coach Louis Van Gaal blasts media

Man U coach Louis van Gaal has insisted that he will not resign despite the huge pressure he is facing in his second year as the coach of Britain's biggest and most successful club. The Dutch man lost at home last week to Southampton and his style of play has infuriated fans with many calling for him to be sacked and replaced with either Ryan Giggs, Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho.

Van Gaal labelled the stories suggesting he had to be persuaded to stay as "awful and horrible" on Thursday's press conference ahead of the F.A cup clash with Derby County. Asked about the claims he offered to walk away from the job, Van Gaal told reporters:
"I have not mentioned that, ever. I am always fighting. I have signed a three-year contract here. It's a process, not one game, and I want to continue until the end. When I'm not willing to do that, I don't think I would have started here one-and-a-half years ago. When I have signed for clubs, I have always spoken a long time with the CEO or with the owners, not only at United, but also at Bayern Munich and Barcelona, and I have the faith that they always support me. But that gives more pressure to you, because you must fulfil the expectations they have of you. Of course we can fulfil those expectations. We are now only halfway. I cannot lose any more, because then I am condemned for the fourth time that I have been sacked."
Manchester United is fifth in the Premier League. They are out of the Champions League and the League Cup.

Nigerians React After The Economist Tagged GEJ As "An Ineffectual Buffoon"

The Economist, an English-language weekly newspaper owned by the Economist Group, has described Nigeria’s former president Goodluck Jonathan as “an ineffectual buffoon”.
In an article titled “Nigeria’s economy Crude tactics”, the newspaper said:

Buhari’s government has cracked down on corruption, which had flourished under the previous president, Goodluck Jonathan, an ineffectual buffoon who let politicians and their cronies fill their pockets with impunity.”

Below is the full article. Meanwhile, Nigerians have taken to Twitter to show their disapproval of that statement.

“MORE than 30 years ago, a young general swept to power in the fifth of Nigeria’s military coups since independence in 1960.

The country he inherited was a mess: bled dry by pilfering politicians within and hammered by falling oil prices without. Last year that general, Muhammadu Buhari, became president again—this time in a democratic vote. The problems he has inherited are almost identical. So are many of his responses.

In the eight months since Mr Buhari arrived at Aso Rock, the presidential digs, the homicidal jihadists of Boko Haram have been pushed back into the bush along Nigeria’s borders. The government has cracked down on corruption, which had flourished under the previous president, Goodluck Jonathan, an ineffectual buffoon who let politicians and their cronies fill their pockets with impunity.

Lai Mohammed, a minister, reckons that just 55 people stole $6.8 billion from the public purse over seven recent years.

Mr Buhari, who—unusually among Nigeria’s political grandees—is said to have just $150,000 and a couple of hundred cattle to his name, abhors such excess.

As military ruler he jailed, fired or forced into retirement thousands of bureaucrats whose fingers had been in the till. This time, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested dozens of bigwigs, including a former national security chief accused of diverting $2.2 billion.

The EFCC has a poor record of securing convictions; but a single treasury account has been introduced to try to stop civil servants siphoning off cash. And agencies which may not be remitting their fair share to the state are having their books trawled by Kemi Adeosun, the finance minister.

Such measures are doubly important because the economy is swooning along with the oil price. The sticky stuff directly accounts for only 10% of GDP, but for 70% of government revenue and almost all of Nigeria’s foreign earnings.

Omo-Agege inagurated as a senator

THE people of Delta Central senatorial district, yesterday, went into jubilation, following the swearing-in of Obaisi Ovie Omo-Agege as the senator representing the district by the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, at the National Assembly, in Abuja.
The people who danced round some streets in Ughelli, Orogun, Sapele, Effurun and Okpe, described Omo-Agege’s inauguration in the Senate as a good omen for the Urhobo nation.

The swearing-in of Omo-Agege of the Labour Party was sequel to the Appeal Court judgment which removed Chief Ighoyota Amori of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP

Speaking to Vanguard, the national leader of Urhobo Youths Nationality Council, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, a prominent Urhobo leader, Chief Austin Uloho, Mr Friday Onodjae and Prince Elvis Oharisi, said it was a new dawn for the people of the area.

Congratulating Omo-Agege on his swearing-in, Egbo expressed confidence that Omo-Agege would give adequate representation to the Urhobo nation.

Uloho, on his part, said that the election of Omo-Agege into the Senate was a good omen for the Urhobo, noting that Omo-Agege was very passionate and committed to the Urhobo project.

Onodjae said: “The Urhobo will for once see what representation at the Senate means. Omo-Agege is a man that will use his contacts to attract development to Delta Central.”

Speaking in the same vein, Oharisi said, “This is the hand of God. The Urhobo mandate has been restored.”

El-Rufai suspends monarch caught with marijuana

The Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, on Thursday announced the suspension of the Village Head of Goma in Gimi District of Danga Local Government Area, Alhaji Danladi Ibrahim, over a drug-related offence.

The monarch was said to be in possession of 1.5kg of marijuana (India hemp) when he was arrested by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on January 20, this year.

El-rufai, through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan, said the suspension was with immediate effect.
The statement read, “In a dramatic demonstration of its campaign against drugs, the Kaduna State Government has announced the immediate suspension of a traditional ruler who was arrested for a drug-related offence. “

The statement added that the NDLEA had arrested Danladi on January 20, 2016, while he was in possession of 1.5kg of marijuana.

“He admitted ownership of the illegal drug, and the NDLEA will be charging him to court as soon as it concludes it investigations.

“The NDLEA subsequently notified the Kaduna State Security Council of the arrest of the traditional ruler. While deliberating on the matter, the council recommended his suspension from office pending the conclusion of investigations and possible trial. The government accepted the recommendation,” the statement added.

NERC: New electricity tariffs take effect on Monday

The new tariffs approved for electricity consumers across the country will become effective on Monday and will enable the power distribution, generation and transmission companies to acquire needed infrastructure, the acting Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Anthony Akah, has said.

Akah, who said this when he led top executives of the regulatory agency on a courtesy call on the National Orientation Agency in Abuja on Thursday, also said there was no going back on the new tariffs.

The NERC boss said the lack of cost-reflective tariffs had hindered the electricity companies from acquiring the necessary infrastructure, adding that with the new tariffs, they would not have any excuse for not delivering on agreements they entered into with the government.

He said the Nigerian power sector reform must provide an appropriate pricing template, which had been lacking, leading to deficiency in revenues from power.

This, he added, necessitated the new Multi-Year Tariff Order to enable the generating, transmission and distribution companies to provide the needed infrastructure for higher generation and supply of electricity to meet the needs of consumers.

Akah said under the new MYTO, all premises must be metered and consumers who subscribe to specific metering models must be supplied meters within 60 days after which they would not be disconnected or charged on estimation if a meter was not supplied.

He also said that a Power Consumer Assistance Fund had been put in place to cater for the electricity needs of the less-privileged in the country, adding that the visit was part of the establishment of a coordinated approach to creating public awareness ahead of the February 1 implementation date of the new MYTO.

French president cancels lunch after Iranian president asked not to share wine during his visit to France

france President François Hollande decided having wine with lunch is more important than breaking bread with Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani during an official visit to Paris.
Hollande scrapped the lunch at the Élysée Palace after Rouhani asked for a halal menu in keeping with his Muslim faith, and that also meant no wine at the table during his first visit as president to the City of Light.

“It is not the halal which was a problem but the wine,” France's ambassador to the United States, Gérard Araud, said on Twitter. “Nobody should constrain anybody to drink or not to drink.”
Hollande’s decision means he’s likely to avoid the criticism leveled at Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi this week.
In Italy, where wine is just as much a part of the culinary routine as in France, officials submitted to the Iranian leader’s demands during a state dinner Monday. Italian officials also erected large boxes around nude statues at Rome’s Campidoglio museum to protect the gaze of officials from the Islamic Republic from falling on artists’ renderings of the human form.
Renzi’s decision outraged critics on the left and right.

"Respect for other cultures cannot and must not mean negating our own," said Luca Squeri, a lawmaker in former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's center-right Forza Italia party. "This isn't respect, it's canceling out differences and it's a kind of surrender."
